Sunrise/Sunset Map
The sunrise and sunset calculator proved to be the most used feature of goFLYING, so I have built a website dedicated to this functionality with some enhancements to make it easier to use.
Sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset times can be calculated for any location worldwide by browsing and clicking on a map. Wherever possible, the time zone for the selected location is automatically used, and elsewhere the user can select their time zone.
Users can export a PDF document showing a one year calendar of sunrise and sunset times for their selected location.
Feedback:
- "I found your site straightforward and instinctive to use, a credit to the designer!"
- "Excellent site; simple, intuitive and just what I needed."
Anglia Sea Ventures
Anglia Sea Ventures offers yacht charter, sailing experiences and training from their base in Ipswich. When they started trading in early 2007, they commissioned me to establish their brand in print and online.
I designed a logo and a variety of marketing material including business cards, flyers, headed paper, presentation folders and fact sheets.
I built the Anglia Sea Ventures website with a variety of audiences in mind, from corporate clients to gift experience companies. All the important sections of the site are prominently visible on the home page allowing easy navigation.
The site was carefully designed to allow editing within standard WYSIWYG editors whilst still using advanced techniques to avoid duplication of common page sections such as the navigation. This allows Anglia Sea Ventures to easily maintain their own site without the expense of a dedicated content management system.
Feedback:
- "If websites sell product, you will be first in line. Very professional and way better than the competition." David Linder, Peters Opal
goFLYING
goFLYING is a site for private pilots in the UK featuring an interactive flight planning tool, a GPS track log viewer, and a sunrise/sunset calculator.
To plan a flight, users can use an interactive map or type-ahead waypoint suggestion to enter a route, and tracks, distances and flight times will be calculated for them. The finished plan can be exported in a variety of PDF formats.
GPS track logs from a variety of devices may be imported and displayed on a map, along with altitude and groundspeed graphs. The site also integrates with Google Earth allowing track logs and plans to be displayed in 3D.
The site makes the most of modern browser capabilities to make the features easy to use. Wherever possible, an alternative for non-JavaScript browsers is supplied, and a simplified PDA version is available for use on the move.
Feedback:
- "This is the first online flight planner I have come across and I must say I think it is fantastic!"
- "Amazing site! Excellent design."
- "It's an excellent example of what an interactive web application can be."
- "There are no words to describe how good this site is. It takes all the hassle out of the planning so you can just get on and fly."
Rhona Beck Studio
Rhona Beck Studio approached me in early 2005 and asked me to build an art sales website. I produced branding and designs, developed all the required software for the site, and set up hosting and email addresses on my own server.
Customers can browse the site, add artworks to their basket, then proceed to the checkout, which collects delivery details then passes them through to a secure payment facility provided by HSBC. Data collection is secured with an SSL certificate.
Site administrators can add new artists and artworks at any time using a secure management area. Thumbnails and preview images are automatically generated from uploaded images. Various text areas on the site can also be edited from the management area, including the artist biographies, homepage introductions, and terms and conditions. Styles can be added to the text without knowledge of HTML, by using simple BBCode tags.
Feedback:
- "I have to say how professional it looks. I am very impressed. I am honestly gobsmacked by how good it is." Carol Peet, Rhona Beck Studio.
- "Superb site, very impressed!" Simon Clark, Mark Simon Fine Art.
